- Learn the basics of the State Pension
- Go to https://www.gov.uk/check-state-pension to find out:
- How much State Pension you could get
- When you can get it
- If you can increase it
- How you could increase it
- Check the value of your current workplace pension, by logging into your account on PlanViewer. The easiest way to do this is by downloading the PlanViewer app. Note, if you haven’t already registered your account, refer to this guide to help you get set up.
- Consider any pensions held elsewhere and find any old pension posts using the government service for finding pension contact details https://www.gov.uk/find-pension-contact-details
- If you have multiple pension pots you may wish to consider combining them into one account. Find out more about transferring your savings at https://retirement.fidelity.co.uk/about-workplace-pensions/transferring-savings/
- Know your contribution options and if your employer offers matching contributions. You can find details in your Contributions Explained document available under the ‘Forms and Documents’ section of your PlanViewer account.
- Know how your savings are invested. Pensions are designed for the long-term investing. Default investment strategies often focus on growth earlier in your career and gradually reduce risk as you approach retirement.
In your PlanViewer account, you can;
- View how your savings are invested;
- Find information on the Plan’s default and self-select options, under the ‘Plan Information’ section.

- Use the planning tool in the PlanViewer app to help you:
- Understand if you’re on track for the retirement lifestyle you want and create a personalised plan;
- Explore how changes could affect your retirement outcome, including;
- Increasing or deceasing your monthly contributions
- Changing your target retirement age
- Adding a one-off lump sum contribution
